Anti-smoking commercial

The creators of this video set up 2 guitar playing cowboys in what looks like downtown New York. The audience around them is first surprised by the characters setting up a campfire in traffic, but is then shocked that the guy sings through a microphone held up to his throat ... presumably because he had throat cancer and lost his voice from smoking. The purpose of this video is clearly to send a message to smokers about the dangers of smoking. Their stance is that smoking is bad for you, and this video's genre was TV videos since it was first a television commercial. The intended audience seems to be all smokers, especially because it was a commercial played on all channels so anyone could have seen it. I think their message is effective just given the shock value of the commercial. Also, they're not saying smoking WILL kill you, but even if it doesn't you could lose a lung. Definitely scary.

  1. Ethos: This video displays ethos by advertising at the very end that the Truth campaign made the video. For anybody familiar with previous truth commercials you would know that they are a reliable source of information.

Pathos:The video absolutely appeals to viewers emotions. For one thing, the guy singing needs to use a device held up to his throat probably because he had lung cancer from smoking. The passer-bys in the background also looked shocked when watching the guy sing which could influence the viewer as well.

Logos:The video appeals to logos, or logic, by posting statistics at the end. They say how many tobacco users die from tobacco related illnesses every year which is a hard fact.
